The Grand Haven Township Fire/Rescue Department placed safety signs on the back of their trucks. Trucks were parked near Peach Plains and Rosy Mound elementary schools this week.
"We are just trying to bring some awareness to the drivers for the first few days of school," Township Fire Chief Tom Gerencer said.
Although there have been many campaigns across the country to raise driver awareness about pedestrian safety, nearly 400 children ages 15 and younger are killed each year when they're struck by vehicles.
"Sometimes drivers will try to multitask and forget about their speed while going through school zones," Gerencer said.
Grand Haven Township firefighters will also be doing fire prevention activities this fall at the elementary schools.
