In the second time in a month, an Ottawa County jailer said he found an unresponsive inmate who'd attempted to kill himself.

In both cases - the last nearly a month ago - corrections staff administered CPR and the inmate was sent to a hospital, where they both later died from injuries suffered.

In this case, Daniel Shane Bugielski, 31, was in a medium security pod on Sept. 12, and had fashioned a bed sheet to restrict the flow of oxygen, the Sheriff's Department said in a news release. A jailer performing cell checks, found him unconscious. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

He died on Sunday, Sept. 15, at an area hospital.

Scott Allen Meirs, 50, of Spring Lake Township, also died at a hospital in early August after a similar suicide attempt, according to the sheriff’s office.

Meirs was in jail on a second-degree home invasion charge with a $25,000 bond. A deputy was making rounds in the jail housing unit and saw the inmate trying to asphyxiate himself with bedding from the cell. Deputies administered emergency assistance, including CPR.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Investigative Unit is investigating this most recent situation, and has not yet completed the investigation on the last inmate death.

Our jails are much better than southern jails. Inmates die down in Bama, Tennessee, Georgia, W.VA, KY, Arkansas and Louisianna all the time. 2 a month is nothing. In a southern state 4 to 7 a month. If they talk back to a southern Sheriff - they get a baton between the teeth. The average salary for Sheriff in a southern state is about $7,000 a year a deputy makes even less about $4,000 a year with minimal training. Our jails are new. The staff is highly trained. If you try to hang yourself in jail - thats just tuff toe nails. Things are even worse in other countries like Mexico or Russia or how about North Korea. Everyone in a whole jail complex up and disappeared.

zwesterhouse your comments appear cold-hearted . I hope you or your family never makes a mistake or a poor choice and land in jail in any place. Many in jail are at the bottom and do not need a push, but instead they need a hand or a prayer. Please pray for people in jail that they might see the way instead of despair.
