In the second time in a month, an Ottawa County jailer said he found an unresponsive inmate who'd attempted to kill himself.
In both cases - the last nearly a month ago - corrections staff administered CPR and the inmate was sent to a hospital, where they both later died from injuries suffered.
In this case, Daniel Shane Bugielski, 31, was in a medium security pod on Sept. 12, and had fashioned a bed sheet to restrict the flow of oxygen, the Sheriff's Department said in a news release. A jailer performing cell checks, found him unconscious. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
He died on Sunday, Sept. 15, at an area hospital.
Scott Allen Meirs, 50, of Spring Lake Township, also died at a hospital in early August after a similar suicide attempt, according to the sheriff’s office.
Meirs was in jail on a second-degree home invasion charge with a $25,000 bond. A deputy was making rounds in the jail housing unit and saw the inmate trying to asphyxiate himself with bedding from the cell. Deputies administered emergency assistance, including CPR.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Investigative Unit is investigating this most recent situation, and has not yet completed the investigation on the last inmate death.
