An ambulance transported the 47-year-old Grant man to North Ottawa Community Hospital following the 4:10 p.m. incident.

The man was not identified. Authorities said he was not seriously injured.

Emergency personnel rushed to the construction zone northwest of the I-96 and M-104 intersections late Tuesday afternoon when it was reported that a construction worker fell off a new bridge.

“The guy was working on the overpass, slid off the edge of the embankment and landed on the sand below,” Crockery Township Fire Chief Gary Dreyer said.

“He fell approximately 18-20 feet,” Dreyer said. “He was stable and talking to us.”

The man was working on the bridge over the new on-ramp from M-231 to westbound I-96, said John Richard, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation.

“He was working on concrete forms and lost his footing,” Wolffis said.

M-231 is the new highway being constructed from M-45 to I-96 to help alleviate traffic problems on U.S. 31.

This is the second accident involving a road construction worker in northwest Ottawa County this month.

On Sept. 5, a Holland man was struck by a tractor operated by a co-worker off the southbound lanes of U.S. 31, near Warner Street in Grand Haven Township. Robert Greving Jr., 25, was taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The fatal incident is still under investigation.

Where was his fall protection?

thats what i was thinking, working on heights always calls for fall protection

I hope this person survives and does well. When will there be an update. This article has remained unchanged for some time.

According to the story, he fell down an embankment - not off the bridge. If so, not sure "fall protection " would be required.
