Shortly before 6 a.m., Fruitport Township police and firefighters responded to a vehicle fire on eastbound I-96, near the Sternberg Road overpass. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle without injury, police said.

Another eastbound vehicle saw the fire and traffic slowing in the area due to this incident, and its driver lost control on the wet roadway from earlier rain, police said. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled over.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the crashed vehicle, was transported by ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A third incident, a rear-end crash, took place during the traffic congestion in this same area before police had cleared vehicles from the previous incidents and emergency responders were still on the scene. This crash resulted in minor damage to two vehicles. One of the drivers sought treatment after leaving the scene, police said.

No further information, including identifying information of the involved parties, is being released by police at this time.

The cause of the vehicle fire remains under investigation.
