The crash occurred on West Spring Lake Road between VanWagoner and Taft. A utility pole was also taken down by the impact of the Suburban.
Emergency workers freed the driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, from the wreckage.
Police said the driver was a 39-year-old Spring Lake man. He was driving north on West Spring Lake Road when he went across the southbound lane and took out a mailbox, hit the bottom of the power pole, then hit the tree. Two tiers of wires kept the top part of the pole, inluding a transformer, and electric lines from failing.
Power remained on in the area, but Grand Haven Board of Light and Power employees arrived on the scene about 10:40 p.m. to assess the situation and repair the pole.
Emergency personnel said that while the man wasn't wearing a seatbelt, he suffered only minor injuries. An ambulance took him to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon.
Neighbor Paul Realini said his family felt the collision at their home.
"I looked outside to see if a tree had fallen," Realini said. "Then my son said there were a lot of (emergency) lights on the road."
