Foul play is also not suspected, said Sgt. Matt Wildfong of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
Eleven-year-old Shelia Gutierrez Rivera disappeared about 4 p.m. Tuesday when she was supposed to have gone to a neighbor’s house to do homework, Wildfong said.
She was reported missing at 6 p.m. when her mother went looking for her daughter and discovered she had never gone to the neighbor’s house in an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Martinie Drive.
Police searched the neighborhood, but did not locate the girl.
Wildfong said they later learned that she was with an 18-year-old male family friend whose whereabouts are also unknown.
The girl is 4 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 110 pounds. She has long brown hair and brown eyes.
Police said she was last seen wearing black jeans, a navy Hollister hooded sweatshirt and green, gray and blue Addidas shoes. She also carried a multi-colored backpack decorated with musical notes.
Anyone with information on the child should call Ottawa County Central Dispatch at 800-249-0911, or Silent Observer at 1-877-88 SILENT.
