Police said Jeffrey Lee Howell, 57, was driving his 2003 Acura east on James Street at about 9:05 p.m., and had stopped at the red traffic light before proceeding to cross U.S. 31. The Acura was struck in the driver's side by a 2013 Freightliner semitrailer tractor heading south on the highway.
Howell was pinned in his smashed car and had to be extricated by Holland Township firefighters. The Wyoming man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.
The semi driver, 41-year-old Ronnie Henry of Jonesboro, Ga., was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, said Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.
Austin said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
