The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said a maintenance worker reported seeing smoke and flames coming from a building at Village Apartments at about 12:50 a.m. Officers found heavy smoke and flames engulfing part of the building, and they used ladders to rescue a number of residents from balconies.

The department didn't release the victim's name. Family members said she was a woman in her 60s and her boyfriend was injured in the fire.

The American Red Cross is helping displaced residents.

Authorities said they haven't determined what caused the fire.

This is indeed a very sad thing and my heart goes out to the victims family.

We don't have enough local news, we need to start adding Kalamazoo? I think there was a jaywalking down in Mississippi as well but haven't seen anything written up about that.
