Police said Wayne Martinez of Muskegon had stopped for the stop sign on southbound 148th Avenue at Leonard Road, then pulled his 2009 Chrysler Sebring into the path of a 1998 Jeep Cherokee heading east on Leonard at about 11:30 a.m. Both cars crashed into the stop sign after the initial impact.

Martinez, 41, was taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital by ambulance. His condition was not known at press time.

The driver of the Cherokee, 22-year-old DeLaine Rae Vanderlaan of Spring Lake, and a passenger in her SUV, a 7-month-old girl, were not injured, according to Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Austin said Martinez was cited for failing to yield, while Vanderlaan was cited for driving with a suspended license.

So if I'm reading this right - you get caught driving on a suspended license, you get a ticket and your on your way?

If I were her, I would probably call someone for a ride. I wonder if she was allowed to drive away.

(I would hope that incarceration would be reserved for egregious repeat offenders - if you were implying that that would have been the proper outcome.)

I'm hoping that your question is rhetorical. Are you always this quick or is it just in the morning? What do you feel would be the appropriate "justice" meted out; you obviously feel DeLanie wasn't treated with due severity.

DeLanie will visit with the judge, pay the fines, and her suspension will likely have additional time. She will be paying for the repair on her vehicle from out of pocket too, her insurance, if she has any, isn’t going to cover damage that occurred while driving illegally. And, one could argue in civil court that this accident would have never happened if she hadn't been operating her vehicle illegally, therefore she is actually the cause and at fault. This is of course a stretch but the civil docket is filled with cases that are a stretch; let’s sue everybody.

Thank you for the information. Sorry to bother you this morning. I honestly didn't know what happens when you get caught driving on a suspended license. I thought it odd that if this was a traffic stop and not an accident that she would just get a ticket and be on her way. I guess that's what I get for thinking.

That sad part of this is that the 22 year old loser driving on a suspended license has reproduced and has a 7 month old that will probably be just like her someday. We need more social programs to help these people out. Come on everyone, pay a little more in your taxes to help these people out.

Nice photo of the injured patient. Hopefully he files a lawsuit so he can pay for the fines and costs.

At the risk of being called a troll again, I will ask anyway...Why would he file a lawsuit over his picture being taken in a public place?
