Chris Parker, 50, of Coopersville suffered minor injuries in the crash, police said. He was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital.

Bill Wierenga said his wife alerted him when she heard the crash shortly after 6 p.m. in front of their home in the 13200 block of Cleveland Street (M-104) in Crockery Township. Wierenga said he checked on the lone occupant of the SUV.

"He was awake, but kind of drifting into shock," Wierenga said. "I called 911."

Bob Dreese said Parker had just dropped him off at his home in Spring Lake Township and was heading back to Coopersville. He was fairly certain that Parker wouldn't have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Police said Parker apparently drifted off the side of the road and his tires got caught in the snow and ice. The SUV went across the Wierengas' driveway and knocked down a couple of small trees before stopping just short of a much larger tree.

Crockery Township firefighters used a hydraulic tool to tear off the driver's door and extricate the injured man, who was pinned inside his vehicle.
