The Muskegon County Sheriff's Department said the driver told officers he was traveling about 40-45 mph on southbound U.S. 31 in Fruitland Township. The driver said he started to lose control of the cattle trailer and struck the rear of another truck.

Authorities said it's unclear if the speed of the cattle trailer led to the string of collisions.

A Muskegon County deputy suffered minor injuries when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle during the pileup.
