Icy Pontaluna causes chain-reaction crash

Friday's icy roads caused a chain-reaction crash involving three semi-trucks and two cars on Pontaluna Road in Fruitport Township.

It happened at about 9 a.m. when one driver hit the brakes and then several other vehicles lost control as they also tried to stop.

A resident who lives across the street said the roads were covered in ice at the time.

"Sheer glass, sheer ice," Bruno Szpieg said Friday morning. "It's been that way all morning. It's a very heavily traveled road here and I'm surprised there weren't more accidents."

No one was seriously injured in the crash, police said. The road was closed for a couple of hours as crews tried to clear the scene.

Pontaluna has got to be the worst maintained road ever. I travel it at least twice a week year round and the winter maintenance is atrocious at best. With two schools, at least four churches and being one of the main arteries into Fruitport, you would think it would be better maintained.
