The fire was called in at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday on a report of smoke in a home. Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officers arrived to investigate and found flames in the basement.

Called in to assist at the scene were Grand Haven, Ferrysburg, and Spring Lake fire departments.

Two firefighters were checked for possible injuries when flames blazed through the home and they had to quickly evacuate.

The fire flared up, and firetrucks blared sirens to alert firefighters to get out of the home due to the flareups.

One man fled out the side door, while another smashed a front window and jumped through, assisted to the ground by other firefighters.

GHDPS Chief Jeff Hawke said the men were not injured.
