Jurors deliberated for about an hour and a half following the one-day trial of 21-year-old Jacob Tyler VanDyke on Thursday in 58th District Court.
The jury also found VanDyke guilty of a moving violation causing serious impairment.
He faces up to 93 days in jail and/or a $5,000 fine when he is sentenced. A sentencing date hasn’t been set.
Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police said VanDyke was westbound on Savidge Street late that Wednesday night. He turned into the Shell gas station in front of an eastbound motorcycle driven by Michael Francis Pawlak, 30, also of Spring Lake.
Pawlak did not have any visible problems as he walked to the witness stand Thursday. He told the jury he suffered a broken leg, broken arm and traumatic brain injury in the crash.
He confirmed that he didn’t remember anything about the crash, but verified that he was at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids for a week, followed by three weeks of rehabilitation at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital.
Pawlak answered his questions without hesitation, but said he has long-term consequences from the crash and only time will tell if he continues to suffer from the brain injury.
He said he will have another wrist surgery in the future and will soon have a rod in his leg removed.
