At about 7:30 a.m., a silver pickup truck travelling on 68th Avenue in Polkton Township hit the back of a box truck, and then collided head-on with a southbound SUV.

The driver of the box truck — Scott Watson, 39, of Coopersville — said he heard a "big boom" after the pickup truck hit his vehicle.

“I pulled over (and) just started running up here to make sure no one was dead,” he said.

Emergency crews from the Coopersville-Polkton and Allendale fire departments had to rip both the pickup and SUV open with special tools to extricate the men.

It took about a half-hour to get the driver out of the pickup truck, and about five minutes more to extricate the driver of the SUV.

“We had to do a lot more cutting on the SUV,” said Coopersville-Polkton Deputy Fire Chief Mike Smith.

The driver of the Dodge Dakota pickup truck, 54-year-old Robert James Hill Jr. of Jenison; and the driver of the SUV, 25-year-old Kurt Russell Zwak of Coopersville, were taken by ambulances to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with serious injuries. Police said both men had multiple injuries, but were conscious at the scene.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, both men were hospitalized in fair condition, a hospital official said.

Officials shut down 68th Avenue north of Leonard Road for nearly two hours while they cleaned up the wreckage and investigated the crash. This is the main road from I-96 to Allendale and Grand Valley State University.
