Fruitport Township Police said the man had already left the scene when they responded to the single-car rollover crash about 9:30 a.m. in the area of South Dangle Road and Ellis Road.
Other motorists at the scene said the car was under water in the ditch.
“The ditches along South Dangle Road are relatively deep, and water had collected in the ditch and frozen over,” said Detective Lt. Bruce Morningstar. “The vehicle had broken through the ice and was upside down.”
The “angel” used his body weight to break through the ice. He was in water up to his chest, witnesses told police.
He assisted the driver out of the car and over to another vehicle where he waited for police.
Morningstar said the driver was cold, but not injured.
Police said sunshine and slightly warmer air temperatures should not deceive drivers. Roads are still ice-covered and slippery.
“Drivers still need to be extremely cautious on the icy roads,” Morning star said. “Police are still reporting to crashes and slide-offs throughout the area.
“Although visibility conditions have improved, motorists are encouraged to reduce speeds and drive with due care and caution,” Morningstar said.
