Michael Wawee Jr. announced his resignation on Thursday. The Republican from Walker was arrested earlier this month.

He's accused of overcharging families for the engraving of grave markers while working as a salesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids. Police said the diocese was not aware of the overcharging.

In a statement distributed by the county, Wawee says he needs to focus his energy on his family and proving his innocence.

The Kent County Board of Commissioners will have 30 days after Wawee's Feb. 28 resignation to appoint a replacement for the rest of the current term, which runs through the end of the year.

Glad they got him since the situation is so grave and I'm sure he'd try to bury the issue. Even though his attorney will compose a defense, it won't do any good for the victims who are instead decomposing. Legal proceedings tend to be pretty cryptic so the case may remain in purgatory for awhile. Maybe they can get this guy to rat out his accomplices, but then he'd be at risk of ending up six feet under as snitches are not tolerated by the Kent County Republican Commissioners. As if that weren't bad enough, I hear that particular cemetery tends to gouge families on tombstone engraving too, even with the employee discount and customer loyalty program for frequent diers. I guess it's better to be judged by twelve instead of being carried by six as the saying goes.

I'm still going to lock my doors and roll up my windows next time I'm in Kent County though, since some Republican commissioners have not yet been captured and are still out there menacing the community. Forget the "Wealthy Street Boys", Black Guerilla Family, MS-13, and the other crip/blood affiliates in the area. The Kent County Commission has waged a long and bloody battle to secure its spot at the top of West Michigan's underworld.
