Gerber Memorial Hospital Vice President Janice Stone said hospital staff noticed smoke at about 4 a.m. Wednesday on the hospital's third floor and alarms sounded. She said about 19 patients were evacuated to the hospital's emergency department.

No one was injured.

Several area fire departments responded to the hospital in Fremont, about 40 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

Stone said an elevator motor fire was the source of the smoke. She said the hospital, which is part of Spectrum Health, didn't sustain fire or smoke damage.

Patients were returned to their rooms at about 5:30 a.m.

Stone said hospital staff and fire crews followed their training in handling the situation.
