Stephen Junior Mattias, 31, was in critical condition following the 9:15 p.m. crash on the westbound I-196 on-ramp from Byron Road.

His children, Kaytlin, 9, Steffie, 8 and Temperance, nine months, were wearing seatbelts and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies reported that Mattias was eastbound in his 2001 GMC Envoy, lost control of the vehicle and went off the road, hit a culvert and flipped.

Stephen Mattias was ejected from the vehicle.

An ambulance transported him to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. The children were taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospita.

The crash remains under investigation.

How does one get ejected if he was wearing a seatbelt,or perhaps not. Some how the driver had enough sense to buckle in his children.
