Dad wrote mom he accidentally killed their baby

A man wrote a letter from prison to the mother of their baby, telling her he accidentally killed the 4 ½-month-old girl and left the body in a "peaceful place," authorities said Thursday at a court hearing to decide if he should be tried for murder.

The evidence came out on the first day of a probable-cause hearing to decide whether Sean M. Phillips, 24, should face an open murder charge in Mason County Circuit Court in Ludington.

Authorities say he killed Katherine Phillips in 2011, but they've never found her body. Sean Phillips already is serving 10-15 years in prison for unlawful imprisonment in the girl's disappearance.

Authorities said he wrote the letter from prison in 2012 to the baby's mother, Ariel Courtland.

In the letter, Phillips said he violently ripped Katherine Phillips' car seat from his car and she "was thrown from it."

He said he held the baby's body and cried, then drove around for a long time before setting the infant down in a "peaceful place." He said he didn't intend to leave the body, but got lost and couldn't find it.

Courtland was Thursday's first witness, talking about the last time she saw her daughter.

Under cross-examination by defense lawyer David Glancy, she said that she didn't believe Phillips would deliberately hurt their child.

Never underestimate what heinous things human beings are capable of. I can't imagine how the family is dealing with this messed up situation.

Kate is better off with Jesus than with any of them.

Kate is not with jesus... she's dead. but if you need to think that because the reality of life and death is too harsh for you to handle.. go for it.

MeanSmith

I agree with Wolverine, Kate is in a better place in heaven, with Jesus!! Amen!!

jesus is make believe..

I mostly agree with you but just to be clear, Jesus did physically exist. The son of some god, miracle maker, reincarnate; whatever, is likely fiction.

I agree with Dhbreezy, humans are the worst. Capable of great things and the most debased. On another side note: You never know in the "comment" section what the age of the respondent is. You could be playing word games with a juvenile.

SrqDude

Humans can be pretty heinous, I'm not so sure we are the worst though.

How a person "accidentally" violently rips a car seat out of a car with a baby in it is beyond logic.
