Upon arrival, they found the vehicle on its roof, and a motorist pinned inside the car.

Jonathan Hoffman, 45, of Grand Haven Township, was critically injured in the crash, according to Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, his condition was upgraded to good, according to hospital officials.

Hoffman was the only occupant of the 2013 Toyota Rav 4. He was not wearing a seatbelt, Austin said.

Officers determined Hoffman was eastbound, drove off the road, corrected, went off the south side of the road again, struck a culvert, went airborn, glanced off three trees and flipped over.

The Aeromed helicopter was put on standby, but Hoffman was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital.  He was conscious and talking as crews placed him in the ambulance, Austin said.

Grand Haven Township Fire Rescue and Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officers extricated Hoffman from the vehicle that landed on its top in the ditch.

Robert and Jennifer Snideman, 16622 Buchanan were at home at the time of the crash.

"It sounded like a tree falling down," Robert said.

He called 911, while his wife and her sister ran out to the damaged vehicle.

"I was just hoping somebody was alive," Jennifer said. "He was awake, but was blurring his words."

Hoffman was the only occupant of the car.

Why in the world dont people wear seat belts?
No wonder insurance is so high. People need to make at least minimal effort to protect themselves.

My family knows his teen kids and I hope he comes through. Everyone makes mistakes but not wearing a seatbelt is one mistake no one should ever make. God Bless all of them.

Perhaps he should be required to stand on the street corner with a sign "I don't wear seat belts, look what happened to me".

So I certainly don't understand why the City of Grand Haven was 5 miles outside the city assisting GH TWP Fire when they had 10 FF on the scene including 2 paramedics from NOCH and 2 OCSD deputies... and the several accident reconstruction deputies that showed up... O that's right those deputies are not trained as highly as the GHPSD officers...... more duplication and wasteful spending of our tax dollars... which I pay in 4 of the Tri-cities areas.

So angry you are!
