Upon arrival, they found the vehicle on its roof, and a motorist pinned inside the car.
Jonathan Hoffman, 45, of Grand Haven Township, was critically injured in the crash, according to Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, his condition was upgraded to good, according to hospital officials.
Hoffman was the only occupant of the 2013 Toyota Rav 4. He was not wearing a seatbelt, Austin said.
Officers determined Hoffman was eastbound, drove off the road, corrected, went off the south side of the road again, struck a culvert, went airborn, glanced off three trees and flipped over.
The Aeromed helicopter was put on standby, but Hoffman was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital. He was conscious and talking as crews placed him in the ambulance, Austin said.
Grand Haven Township Fire Rescue and Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officers extricated Hoffman from the vehicle that landed on its top in the ditch.
Robert and Jennifer Snideman, 16622 Buchanan were at home at the time of the crash.
"It sounded like a tree falling down," Robert said.
He called 911, while his wife and her sister ran out to the damaged vehicle.
"I was just hoping somebody was alive," Jennifer said. "He was awake, but was blurring his words."
Hoffman was the only occupant of the car.
