Grand Haven’s varsity boys lacrosse team dropped its opening contest of the O-K Rainbow Tier 1 tournament on Wednesday, falling to East Grand Rapids, 13-8.
The Buccaneers’ Jake Vieau opened the scoring, but the Pioneers led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, then poured it on in the second to lead 11-2 at the half.
The Bucs used a big third quarter to trim the Pioneers’ lead down to 11-6, and got as close as 11-8 in the fourth before EGR scored a pair of late goals.
“We were proud of how our guys came out in the second half,” said Bucs’ assistant coach Lee Ingalls. “It would have been easy to pack it in after that second quarter beating. We focused on the little details, earning possessions and running the offense.”
One of the keys to the game was a big effort by EGR’s Paulie Schalau. The University of Massachusetts commit was held to two goals in the first meeting between the two teams, but scored six goals on Wednesday.
Jared VanOordt and Jake Bouman scored twice for the Bucs. Vieau, Trevor MacNamara, Sawyer Curtis and Kane Wilkinson each had a goal and an assist, while A.J. Dalman added an assist.
Freshman Gabe Liebetrue made nine saves in goal.
The Bucs host Holland Christian on Saturday, then travel to Rockford on Monday for O-K Rainbow Tier 1 consolation round action.
