Softball Roundup: Haven girls win invitational

The Grand Haven softball team captured the White Lake Invitational on Saturday, defeating Montague in the championship, 7-5.

Trailing 2-1 after the first inning, Kaylee Hartwell's three-run homer in the second inning kept the Buccaneers up for good. Grand Haven tacked on two more runs in the third before going into cruise-control the rest of the way for the title.

Earlier, Grand Haven beat Ludington 16-1 behind Kylie Masko's one-hitter.

Grand Haven defeated Whitehall, 6-5. The Bucs led 5-0 after the first inning, but the Vikings mounted a comeback, tying things up in the fifth. A walkoff outfield mistake sent the winning run home for Grand Haven.

Hartwell had five hits on the day, including a homerun. Hartwell scored four times with five RBIs. Mikayla Gronback also scored four runs and had five hits, including a triple and three doubles. Audrey Boersen and Masko each earned four hits.

Trojans take Lakes 8 lead

The Fruitport softball team swept both games of a doubleheader against visiting Fremont on Friday, moving into first place in the Lakes Eight Conference at 7-1.

Alyssa Veihl pitched seven innings, striking out three with six hits and a walk in the 3-2 Game 1 victory.

Delaney Bennett had several big hits for the Trojans, including a solo home run in the second inning. Bri Dawson had two doubles, finding home plate both times.

Both the Trojans and Packers’ bats got hot in Game 2, after a low scoring Game 1.
Fruitport gave up an 8-4 lead at the top of the seventh, with Fremont scoring four to bring the contest to a tie.

The Trojans stepped up in the clutch though. With two outs at the bottom of the eighth, Fruitport had three straight single to set up bases loaded. Senior Lindsey Helsen then hit a walkoff single.
