It was a rough day from the Fruitport varsity softball team.

First, the Trojans were held to just one hit in a 6-0 loss to Allendale in the pre-district round of the Class B state tournament.

After that season-ending loss, the Trojans went to Spring Lake’s Wanroy Field and watched the Lakers sweep Tri-County, forcing the Trojans to share the Lakes Eight Confernece title with the Lakers.

Still, coach Bob Dorman had a smile on his face as he left Spring Lake High School.

“Our bats went quiet, and you’ve got to credit their pitcher,” Dorman said of the Falcons’ Mikala MacGeorge. “We’re a good-hitting team, but she had great control of her change-up and she shot down a great-hitting team.”

Taylor Clark got the start for the Trojans and pitched well for most of the game. She also collected Fruitport’s lone hit.

Dorman credited his team with overcoming a lot this spring, including injuries to two of its three seniors. Allison Beckwith suffered a severe ankle sprain and Alexis Black hurt her neck when she crashed into another player sliding into a base.

“We played a majority of the season with just one senior, Lindsey Helson,” Dorman said.

He said moving Helson — an all-regional catcher last year — to third base was a move that jump-started the Trojans.

“At the start of the season, we were an under .500 team,” Dorman said. “We moved Lindsey Helson from catcher to third base, and we went 12-4 after that move. It just made an unbelievable difference. She was an all-regional catcher last year, and she took going to third base without any hesitation. She’s 100 percent a team player.”

Helson will continue her softball career at Muskegon Community College next year.

As for sharing the conference championship, that won’t cost Dorman any sleep.

“I had a great talk with the girls afterward and I couldn’t express how proud I am of them,” he said. “One thing this team never did is give up.”

If she was moved to 3rd to catcher the out come was the same
