The Trojans chose to wear caps with a pink Trojans’ logo and the name Carla embroidered on the side. The caps are a tribute to Mama Reyes — Carla Reyes, the mom of Trojans’ senior Mitchell Reyes.

Carla passed away on Sept. 16, 2013, after a long battle with cancer. She was a fixture at Fruitport football and baseball games for much of the past decade, watching sons Mike and then Mitchell star for the Trojans.

Her passing shook the team, and they responded by rallying around their teammate.

“She was at every game, and when she passed away, we all knew we had to play for her,” said Trojans’ senior and Mitchell’s good friend, Alex Bowen. “We knew she was still watching us. It was important for the team.”

People often ask him about his pink hat.

“Everyone’s like, ‘Why are you wearing pink? Who’s Carla?’ We all like to tell the story. We’re proud of it. It’s who we’re playing for.”
