WMC soccer claims regional crown

Warriors top Charlevoix in a shootout

Western Michigan Christian's girls soccer team wrapped up a Division 4 regional championship with a 3-2 win in a shootout over Charlevoix on Thursday night.

The contest was played at Coast Guard Park in Traverse City.

Alyssa Benedict scored both of the Warriors' goals in regulation, and also scored in the shootout.

Alexys Risken, Mikaela Erickson and Mykayla Denison also scored penalty kicks for WMC.

Goalie Lindsey Johnson made one stop in the shootout.

The No. 4-ranked Warriors (19-1-1) advance to the Division 4 state semifinals on Wednesday. They'll face No. 2-ranked Grandville Calvin Christian (22-1), which advanced with a 3-0 win over Kalamazoo Christian on Thurday. Calvin Christian beat WMC in the regional finals last spring.
