WMC gets its wish: Another shot at Calvin Christian

David Hulings said his Western Michigan Christian girls soccer squad as been hoping and praying for one more shot at Grandville Calvin Christian.

The Warriors get their wish tonight.

The two familiar foes will meet tonight at 7 at Cedar Springs High School in the Division 4 state semifinals. Calvin Christian is gunning for its third consecutive state championship, while WMC is looking to avenge back-to-back season-ending losses to the Squires.

“It’s going to be tough,” Hulings said. “Psychologically, they have the advantage. They’re the two-time state champions, and they beat us the last two years.

“We’ve been praying for this, but we should probably be careful what we wish for. We want to play the very best and beat the very best.”

The Squires have certainly been among the state’s elite this year. At 21-1, they’ve outscored their opponents by a collective score of 120-5. Their only loss was to Hudsonville Unity Christian, which will be playing in the Division 3 semifinals tonight.

WMC has been no slouch, posting a 19-1-1 mark and outscoring its opponents by an almost-as-impressive margin of 100-16. The Warriors’ only loss was a 2-0 setback to Spring Lake, which at the time was ranked in the top five in the Division 2 state poll.

Both teams feature outstanding offenses. The Squires rely on the duo of Hillary Curry and Sarah Klunder for much of their attack, while the trio of Alexys Riksen, Jessica Kinnucan and Alyssa Benedict handle a bulk of the offensive work for WMC.

Both teams are great on defense, with Allison Keizer guarding the net for the Squires and Lindsey Johnson guarding the goal for the Warriors.

“They’re fast, they’re experienced, they’re deep,” Hulings said of Calvin Christian. “I think we’re probably the best team they’ll face, with the goalkeeper we have, and they’re the best team we’ll face with the goalkeeper they have.

“I’m not sure where you find an edge, other than they’re the repeating state champs and we’re not.”
