But this past month, Cole, a Grand Haven native and a member of the University of Michigan women’s volleyball team, took her talents to the national level.

This past February, Cole was invited to a USA Volleyball tryout in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“Later this spring, I received word that I made the U.S. Collegiate National Team,” Cole said. “We trained for seven days at the facilities on Minnesota’s campus, then we went downtown to compete.”

A total of 36 players were selected to the team, including Cole, a 6-foot-5 sophomore-to-be at Michigan. Cole was chosen as an opposite — commonly referred to in volleyball circles as the right side. She also played middle blocker.

“We were split into three teams for 12 of our matches over the last three days, and my team made it to the championship match in four games,” Cole said.

“It was such an awesome experience. Coaches were great, I made a lot of new friends, and it was an honor to play with the USA on my jersey.”

Cole’s exploits at Grand Haven included back-to-back state championships in girls basketball and an appearance in the state semifinals in volleyball. She was a finalist for Michigan’s Miss Basketball and Miss Volleyball awards as a senior.
