Jennifer Elsholz finished Day 1 of the Golf Association of Michigan’s Women’s Championship with a one-stroke lead. She needed it on Day 2.

The Toledo University golfer finished with a 36-hole score of 144, on Tuesday at Spring Lake Country Club, just above the three competitors who tied for second with a 145.

One of those was former Grand Valley State golfer Sarah Hoffman, who went out in a trio with Elsholz and current Laker Kelly Hartigan, making for some neck-and-neck play down the stretch.

University of Tennessee golfer and Brighton native Hannah Pietila and Michigan State’s Lindsey McPherson also tied for second.

“I feel really excited,” Elsholz said after the win. “It was a little bit of a tougher day than yesterday. … Although I wasn’t trying to keep pace with Sarah at all, it wasn’t easy not to. It was kind of like I was playing match play, but I didn’t want to get into that mindset. I just wanted to play golf because I knew there were a lot of girls out here who could go low. I just needed to worry about myself, and worry about the course ahead of me.”

Elsholz did not get off to a good start on Tuesday, bogeying her first two holes.

The Forest Hills Eastern graduate attributed the poor start to nerves.

“My putting, at the beginning it was a little shaky because I was so nervous,” Elsholz said. “I didn’t want to hit anything by, or do anything stupid. In that case I still did a stupid thing.”
