Finney a big help to triathletes

Dell Finney certainly stands out from the crowd.

At well over 6 feet tall and more than 300 pounds, Finney is twice the size of most of the participants in Sunday’s Grand Haven Triathlon.

But it’s not his size that sets Finney apart. It’s his booming voice and his boisterous personality, which uplifted runners as they struggled over the final few hundred yards of the race.

The funny thing is, Finney didn’t even participate in the triathlon. Oh, he ran, shouting encouragement to others along the way, but that was a training run for next weekend’s half Ironman race.

After the run, Finney set up near the end of the final run course at the Grand Haven Triathlon and urged on those coming in toward the finish line.

“Apparently, I can yell real loud,” he said with a laugh. “So they like having me out here.”

Finney, who lives in Muskegon, volunteered for last year’s Grand Haven Triathlon and made several friends, so he came back again this year. He saw several old friends, and made many new ones.

Dozens of people thanked him for his encouragement after the race, and he understands why.
