WOLAK: Big change, slight improvement

This column is the fifth of a weekly series in which Nich will update you on his foray into the world of golf. He is taking lessons at the Grand Haven Golf Club with teaching pro Troy Thom and PGA member professional and director of golf, Kirk Sherman.

There comes a time in every man’s life when he is ready to take the next big step —like going from a half to a full swing.

I had cold feet in the moments before. 

“It’s going to be a little bit harder to hit it, but when you do it’s going to go farther,” Troy said.

There was nothing I wanted more than the latter, but the prospect of the ball being harder to hit was a terrifying one.

But I knew it was time.

After some Linkin Park-level teenage awkwardness during training drills, I found putting the full swing together to be a smooth transition.

The athletic motion of turning my back foot and hips remained the same, and the whooshing sound followed by a grazing of the grass seemed to applaud my courage.

It was still driving, I just had a different car.
