Grand Haven’s varsity volleyball team turned in a sparkling season-opening performance on Friday, winning the Ludington Invitational.
The Buccaneers defeated O-K Red rival West Ottawa in the finals, 25-19, 25-17.
“It was great,” coach Aaron Smaka said. “They’re a good team. It was a good win. You know you’re going to see them down the road. We had great energy, and we played well against them.”
The Bucs showed great balance offensively, with Autumn Monsma leading the way with 49 kills and Amy Kober chipping in with 47. Emily Lachman added 34.
Katie Cole, the team’s sophomore setter, finished with 179 assists.
Today, the Buccaneers host the Grand Haven Lakeshore Invitational. The tournament features plenty of top competition, including Rockford, West Ottawa, Hudsonville, Jenison, Grandville, North Branch, Grand Rapids Northview, Grand Rapids Catholic Central and Byron Center.
TROJANS GO 1-3 AT TC
Fruitport’s varsity volleyball squad opened its season at Traverse City on Friday and finished 1-3.
The Trojans opened with a win over Forest Hills Northern (25-15, 25-13), then turned around and lost to the Rangers (14-25, 25-23, 15-10).
Fruitport then lost to Traverse City West (25-21, 25-16) and Grand Rapids South Christian (25-15, 25-23).
Claire McWilliams led the way with 27 kills and 6.5 blocks, while Delayne Bennett and Alyssa Veihl each had 11 kills.
