Western Michigan Christian’s volleyball team breezed through the Holton Invitational Saturday.
The Warriors didn’t lost a set in pool play or the semifinals, but dropped a 25-17 first set to Holton in the finals.
WMC came roaring back in the second set and won 25-17, before putting the Red Devils away in the deciding set to win the championship, 15-3.
“We have been working on character this year and it was very evident in the finals,” said WMC coach Ed Bailey. “After losing 17-25 to Holton in the first set of the finals, (we) broke Holton’s momentum by tough serves and clicking on offense and defense.”
WMC defeated Godfrey Lee (25-8, 25-10), Muskegon (25-5, 25-13) and Hesperia (25-12, 25-13) in pool play, before taking out Oakridge in the semifinals (24-13, 25-14).
Ashly Schuitema led WMC with 26 aces and 30 digs. Bronte Michura, who transferred from Grand Haven last year, registered 48 kills, while Miranda Shafer, a Mona Shores transfer, had 68 assists.
Cassie Kingma and Amber Sandin each had four blocks.
Junior Varsity: WMC made it to the finals, but lost 15-13 in the deciding match.
