The Spring Lake swimming and diving team returns several state qualifiers from last season’s Lakes Eight champion.

Sophomores Meghan Peel and Jennifer Meulenbelt made a big splash in their first varsity season.

Meulenbelt broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley. The then-freshman qualified for the state meet in the event, as well as the 100-backstroke.

Peel qualified in the 200-freestyle and the 100-backstroke.

Senior Paige Rubleski qualified in diving.

GH hoping to stay in middle of O-K Red

The Grand Haven girls swimming and diving team finished in the middle-of-the pack in the O-K Red last season, and that’s where coach Doug Thorne said he expects the Buccaneers to finish in 2014.

“It’s by far the strongest conference in the state of Michigan,” Thorne said. “We’re just hoping to survive. West Ottawa and Rockford are the two powers. We want to be in the middle-of-the-pack when it’s all said and done. We probably can’t touch them, but we want to keep improving our program.”

Depth is typically a necessary ingredient in any improvement, and the Bucs have it.
