The Grand Haven girls cross country team started their season off with a third-place showing at the Kenowa Hills invitational at Gracewil Golf Course on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers’ harriers were led by senior Hannah Kenny with a time of 21 minutes, 4 seconds.

Newcomers Rachel Sedgewick and Audrey Boersen just trailed, coming in at 21:07. All three medaled in the top 20.

Freshman Renee Borchers (22:09) and senior Mikayla Rowden (22:10) rounded out the top five for the Bucs.

The girls had the fastest 1-5 split of any team on the day (1:06), which coach Scott Przystas will be more important as Grand Haven goes along in its season.

"This is a different kind of running for these girls —as a pack,” Przystas said. “We've typically had one to two girls consistently in the top five spots in the race, and the rest just trying to catch them. This group of young ladies will push each other in practice and meets, which will make for a very exciting season."
