MCC defeated Columbus (Ohio) Bishop Hartley on Saturday, 24-14.

“We were able to make three drives,” said coach Steve Czerwon “And key stops. They can have a drive that’s 80 yards, but if they don’t score, they don’t score on it.”

It was MCC who scored first on Saturday, when quarterback Nick Holt found Zach Winzer for a 22-yard touchdown.

It was the only completion for Holt on the day, but the senior standout got the job done with his legs the rest of the way against Hartley — who was the runner up in Ohio’s Division 5 last season.

Holt scampered for a 20-yard score in the third quarter, and from 36 yards out in the fourth. He went for 93 yards on the ground total.

“Nick really came through with his legs,” Czerwon said.

Two other Crusaders who came through with their legs were running back Tommy Scott and kicker Griffin Seymour.

Scott had 70 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Seymour booted a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter. Hartley missed an attempt trying to match.

MCC took a 10-0 lead into halftime after Seymour’s make.

Hartley scored from seven yards out to open up the scoring in the third quarter, but Holt followed with a touchdown run of his own.

The Columbus school scored once more in the third, only to have Holt follow-up once again.

MCC shut out Hartley in the fourth quarter.

“They ran a lot more plays, but we made key stops on defense,” Czerwon said. “They had 120 yards in penalties. They strained a lot of their drives.”

Lamar Jordan III led the Crusaders with 13 tackles. Nate Jones followed with 11, while Winzer had 10.
