The Spring Lake girls cross country team returns its top two runners from its 2013 squad — the runner-up in Division 2.

But it takes more than just two. The Lakers are trying to figure out who that No. 3 runner will be behind junior Erin O’Keefe and senior Carlyn Arteaga.

“This is going to be an opportunity for someone to step up,” said coach Aaron Andres. “… There really is a nice internal competition. They’re so supportive, but they see the chance to be a top three runner on a team that should do well at state again this year.”

Chief among the contenders for that spot will be senior Lacie Piekarski and junior Brooke Carrier, who finished fourth and fifth on the squad at last season’s state meet respectively.

Grand Haven girls hope to keep streak alive

The Grand Haven girls cross country team lost nearly 30 seniors off last year’s team, but the Buccaneers are still looking to make the state meet — which they finished 18th at in 2013.

“We’ve done it 14 years in a row — looking for number 15,” said coach Scott Przystas. “That’s always an expectation, a goal. That’s a tradition for us, and we want to continue having that be our goal, to experience that.”

The Buccaneers are looking to replace all of their top-three runners from last season.

Grand Haven graduated Claire Borchers, Roxy Glasser (and) Lanie Kenny. Borchers and Glasser were both all-state performers.

Fruitport Trojans’ freshmen to be X-factor in 2014

More than half of the Fruitport girls runners this season are freshmen — including top-runner Kaelee VanOs.

“The girls are very young,” said coach Randy Johnson. “We have one senior, but our top girl is going to be a freshman. It’s just a learning experience for your team; putting the work in, and moving up the ranks, and hopefully we’ll get there.”
