No. 1 teams often talk about having a bulls-eye on their back. Portage Central can consider its target hit.
The Grand Haven volleyball team — which is currently ranked No. 5 in Class A — defeated the No. 1 Mustangs at the Bucs’ home quad on Wednesday, 26-24, 25-20.
“It was super cool,” said Bucs’ senior Autumn Monsma. “I think we came in wanting to beat them because they’re No. 1, and we really want that spot. We were really determined. I think everybody is super excited, and we’re super pumped about what we can do this season.”
Grand Haven beat Stevensville-Lakeshore (23-25, 25-23, 15-10) prior to its matchup with Portage Central and knocked off Forest Hills Central (25-14, 26-24) later in the evening.
The Bucs came back from a 24-20 deficit to beat the Mustangs. Amy Kober spiked the Bucs’ sixth straight point to clinch the victory, causing celebration on the court and in the stands.
“That was crazy,” Kober said. “You just get overwhelmed when everything just comes together — a pass, a great set, a swing that hits the other team’s court. Everything comes together. It just builds inside and then you let it loose.”
