Spring Lake soccer drops season opener

Spring Lake's varsity girls soccer team went through the entire regular season without suffering a loss last year. The same can't be said about the 2011 season as the Lakers lost their opener on Friday, coming up just short against West Ottawa, 2-1. The Panthers scored the game's first two goals, but Spring Lake stormed back, scoring with 10 minutes to go and creating several chances to tie the game in the closing minutes.

“We changed our formation (after falling behind 2-0) and went to a 3-4-3 with three forwards, high pressure, lots of chances,” coach Jeremy Thelen said.
The Lakers made it 2-1 when Katie Smith won the ball on the right side and hit a cross to Morgan Gagnon, whose one-timer found the back of the net.
“It was really cold. It looked like the first game of the season,” Thelen said.
“We showed a lot of promise at the end. If we play like we did at the end of the game throughout the season, we’ll be just fine.”
