College Showcase: Holmes senior season starting strong at Aquinas

Spring Lake senior Heidi Holmes has played a key role in the Aquinas College softball team's stellar start this spring. The Saints have jumped out of the gates with a 15-7 record, including 11 wins in 14 games during their trip to Tucson, Ariz. in early March. Holmes, a senior shortstop, is second on the team with a .356 batting average, and also leads the Saints with 17 runs scored. She has added six doubles, a triple, and six RBIs.

    Aquinas, which recenlty completed a doubleheader sweep of Siena Heights on Sunday, battles at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Wednesday. The Saints will host a pair of games this weekend, squaring off against league foes Concordia on Saturday and Madonna on Sunday. Both contests begin at 1 p.m.
    Grand Haven graduate Jordan Anderson is off to a 3-0 start as a starting pitcher for the Muskegon Community College baseball team.
    Following a Saturday sweep of St. Clair County Community College, the Jayhawks are currently sporting a 19-9 record.
    Anderson, a sophomore lefthander, has posted a sparkling 1.85 earned run average this spring, allowing only seven earned runs in 34 innings of work. He has struck out 56 batters and issued only 16 walks.
    Anderson has committed to play at Davenport University next season.  
    Grand Haven graduate Becca Addison has carried over her strong season of indoor track to the outdoor season.
    At the Colonial Relays held in Williamsburg, Va., on Saturday, Addison was a member of the a record-breaking performance by the Wolverines’ 4x1,500-meter relay team. Freshman Taylor Pogue, senior Danielle Tauro, and sophomore Jillian Smith and Addison, a sophomore, finished the 6,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 4.14 seconds to set a new stadium and meet record, beating the previous mark of 18:22 set by Princeton in 1994.
    Addison also took first-place honors in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in a personal-best time of 9:40.46.
    Addison and the Wolverines travel to the Joyner Johnson Invitational this weekend at UCLA.
