Baseball roundup: Lakers' Keller tosses no-hitter

Spring Lake senior Nick Keller tossed a no-hitter in the first game of a baseball doubleheader with Fremont, only to watch the Packers storm back and take Game 2. Keller fanned 10 batters and walked just three in the Lakers' 5-0 win in Game 1. Adam Clauss was 1-for-3, Ryan Walling had a sacrifice bunt to score a run, and Michael Zietlow doubled to drive in another run. "We played small ball, moved people around, stole some bases, and that was all Nick needed to win the game,' said Lakers' coach Brian Sabo.

Game 2 was a different story as the Lakers’ defense, which was outstanding in the opener, fell apart. Several errors, walks and a pair of hit batters cost Spring Lake in an 11-10 game that was called after five innings because of the weather.

The Lakers will compete in Grand Haven’s Big Buc Invitational today.

Grand Haven completed a season sweep of O-K Red rival Jenison, scoring a 12-7 victory over the visiting Wildcats.

Matt Kroll had two hits and drove in three runs for the Buccaneers. Andy Davis drove in a pair of runs on two hits, while Doug Zelenka belted a double and a home run, diving in two.

Danny Cotter added two hits and Adam Krizan drove in a pair with a single and also played solid defense behind the plate.

Zelenka earned the victory on the mound, giving up four earned runs. Cody Sutton preserved the win, allowing just one hit over three innings of work.

A seven-run third inning put the Bucs on top 9-4. Jenison got back into the game with three runs in the top of the fourth, but Grand Haven cushioned its lead with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth

“All our hard work is paying off. It’s neat to see,” Bucs’ coach Morey Wagenmaker said.

The Buccaneers will host the Big Buc Tournament today.

Fruitport suffered a 4-3 loss to Newaygo on Friday despite a fantastic outing by Cody Merkins.

The Trojans’ hurler threw six solid innings, striking out eight and not allowing an earned run.

Fruitport’s bats were cold until the seventh inning. They stranded 10 runners, including seven in scoring possition, before finally pushing three runs across in the seventh inning. John Sullivan doubled, then Gene Archer walked. Merkins and Lance Gilbert drove in runs for the Trojans.

Game 2 was called after the third inning due to darkness with the Trojans leading 4-1.
