Girls soccer impervious to Monday's snow; WMC baseball also plays

A trio of soccer games and one baseball contest were the only local sporting events to be played on Monday as several inches of snow that blanketed the area led to a rash of cancellations. At Spring Lake, a shorthanded Laker's girls soccer team defeated Orchard View, 2-1.

The Cardinals scored first, but the Lakers dominated play, especially in the second half. Katie Smith set up her team’s first goal, scored by Annie Cook. Smith then scored the game-winner midway through the second half on a long shot that hung up in the wind before dipping under the crossbar.

“We had to work hard for it,” said Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen, whose team is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Lakes Eight Conference play. “We were missing a few key players to injuries and to the school musical, then Molly Miedema got hurt the first few minutes, so she played on a sore ankle.”

Thelen credited Emily Walling, Kelsey Fortier and Katie Miedema with playing well against the Cardinals.

Fruitport also played its Lakes Eight Conference opener. The league favorite Trojans scored an 8-0 win over Grant.

Western Michigan Christian scored a 2-1 win over Hart, thanks to a pair of goals by junior Timera Crosby. Goalie Lauren Merz made several big stops for WMC.

The Warriors’ baseball team came up short against North Muskegon, losing 13-3. Only three of those 13 runs were earned. Omari Lewis went 2-for-2 for the Warriors.

Several other sporting events were called off due to weather conditions.

At Grand Haven, the Buccaneers’ golf, lacrosse, softball and tennis contests were canceled, while at Fruitport, the Trojans’ tennis match against Big Rapids was postponed.

Lakers’ athletic director Cavin Mohrhardt noted that today’s scheduled  Lakes Eight Conference track and field meet at Grant has been postponed due to forecasted rain.
