Area hoops teams earn academic honors

Grand Haven' and Spring Lake's varsity boys basketball teams were named Academic All-State by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. Coach Steve Hewitt's Buccaneers posted the third-best GPA among Class A teams at 3.60. Milford led the state at 3.66, followed by Traverse City Central at 3.64. This is the second consecutive year that Grand Haven has earned this honor. Spring Lake placed third among Class B schools with a 3.62 team GPA. Ionia led the way at 3.65.

Grand Haven’s girls basketball team was an honorable mention in the Class A Academic All-State list with a 3.66 team GPA.

BCAM also releases its own all-state team. Buccaneer junior point guard Shar’Rae Davis earned first-team all-state recognition on the Class A team while classmate Alex Law was a special mention.

Spring Lake’s Michael Hankinson was a special mention on the Class B boys all-state squad.

WMC’s London Burris was a first-team all-state pick in Class C, while teammate Omari Lewis was a special mention.
