Haven baseball falls in final at Newaygo

Grand Haven's varsity baseball team split a pair of games at Saturday's Newaygo Invitaitonal. The Buccaneers beat Cadillac in the opening round, 13-5, before losing to the host Lions of Newaygo in the title game, 10-9. In the title game, Adam Poel and Adam Krizan each had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Doug Zelenka and Will Mulligan also drove in runs. The Bucs led after four innings, but their bats went cold late and Newaygo heated up, scoring twice in the sixth inning, then three times in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

Against Cadillac, Mike Ginocchio earned the win, going five innings and alllowing six hits and four runs while striking out four.

The Bucs’ bats got going early as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Zelenka went 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles while Eric Martin, VerDuin and Poel each had two hits and two RBIs. Matt Kroll added a pair of hits and a run driven in for the Bucs, who are now 5-4 on the season.
