Several GH football players moving on

Several Grand Haven varsity football players have finalized plans for their futures on the gridiron. Erik Johnson, a three-year member of the Bucs' varsity squad in the defensive backfield, will take his talents to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Johnson is also a standout swimmer for the Bucs. Kicker Ben Stegall and offensive lineman Tyler Leonard will continue their football careers at Grand Rapids Community College, while defensive lineman Tyler Rose will walk on at Ferris State University.

The foursome joins Alec Smith (Saginaw Valley State) and Dalton Stenberg (Toledo), giving the Bucs six players advancing to play at the college level.

Those six players helped Grand Haven post two of the most successful seasons in the 100-plus year history of the program in 2009 and 2010.

As juniors, they guided the Buccaneers to a 9-2 record and the school’s second state playoff berth in school history.

In 2010, the Bucs captured the O-K Red Conference title and earned a second consecutive trip to the state playoffs.
