Fruitport softball goes 1-2 at city tourney

Fruitport won its opening game against Muskegon in the GMAA softball tournament, but went winless the rest of the day. Mona Shores defeated Orchad View, 2-1, in the Tier I championship game. Taylor Tejchma went 3-for-4 and Lindsey Helsen and Kaitlyn Alviar added two hits apiece to lead the Trojans against the Big Reds in the 13-2 final. Bari Lee was the winning pitcher, as she allowed three hits and struck out six in the mercy-shorted five-inning contest.

Fruitport followed with a 2-0 loss to Orchard View, then suffered a 14-5 setback to Whitehall in the consolation finals.

In the Tier II bracket, Western Michigan Christian suffered a pair of close losses, falling to Muskegon Catholic Central, 5-1, and to Holton, 7-4.

North Muskegon was crowned the champions after topping MCC in the finals, 9-7.

All five runs scored by the Crusaders against the Warriors were unearned as WMC’s Nicole Teeter struck out five. The lone WMC run was scored when freshman Anna Sweetman got on base and was knocked in on a base hit by classmate Loralle Hallenbeck.
