Baseball roundup: Zelenka's huge day lifts Bucs over EK

Doug Zelenka banged out three hits, including a double, a solo homer and a grand slam, powering Grand Haven's varsity baseball team to a 10-8 victory over East Kentwood. Zelenka's big day at the plate helped the Bucs overcome five walks and six hit batters. Jeff Stevens added four singles and an RBI. Danny Cotter singled, doubled and drove in two runs, while Adam Poel had two singles. Mike Ginocchio pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win, and Poel earned the save with a scoreless seventh inning.

Poel received some help from Zelenka, who made a two-out game-saving catch after the Falcons had loaded the bases.

Grand Haven improves to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in O-K Red Conference play heading into today’s home game against Reeths-Puffer.

KELLER LEADS SL SWEEP

Nick Keller continued his fantastic senior season with a complete-game two-hitter, helping Spring Lake sweep Orchard View in a key Lakes Eight Conference double header.

Keller pitched Game 1 and finished with 14 strikeouts as the Lakers won, 2-0. In the nightcap, Ryan Walling’s clutch base hit in the seventh inning helped the Lakers edge the Cardinals, 7-6.
