“Katie is the engine that makes our team go,” said Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen, who played his collegiate soccer at Olivet Nazarene. “She works so hard. I’m pretty excited because she’s our second player to go to my alma mater.

“The cool thing is, there are a lot of other connections that have led those kids there. It’s closely related to the Wesleyan church, plus Mary Koscielniak (a Grand Haven native) is a grad assistant there, and she really recruited Katie to come down there.”

Smith joined the Lakers’ varsity team late in her freshman season and has been a mainstay in the Lakers’ lineup ever since. She’s helped the Lakers earn Lakes Eight Conference championships in each of her years on the varsity squad from her midfield position.
