Newhouse, Keefe help GH girls place 3rd at league track meet

Megan Newhouse and Jordan Keefe each earned individual O-K Red Conference championships, helping Grand Haven claim third place behind East Kentwood and Rockford at Friday's league meet, held at Rockford. The Falcons ran away with first place at the meet, finishing with 177 points. The host Rams were next with 157.60, followed by the Bucs with 92.

Newhouse won the 100-meter hurdles event with a time of 15.30 seconds. She took third in the 300 hurdles at 48.0 seconds, and was also third in the long jump at 15 feet, 10 inches. Teammate Grace Kendra was one spot better in the long jump, taking second at 15-10.

Keefe, the school record holder in the pole vault, won that event, clearing the bar at 11-9. Kendra finished 10th in the pole vault at 8-6.

Also an outstanding runner, Keefe took second in the 400 dash at 59.38 seconds. Teammate Jenna George was eighth in the 400 at 1 minute, 4.52 seconds.

The Bucs’ outstanding distance runners helped earn valuable points for the team. In the 3,200 run, Julia Stock placed second with a time of 11:18.0. She was followed closely across the finish line by teammate Natalie Myers, who was third at 11:21.42. Kristin King was eighth at 11:45.45.

Grand Haven’s Laura Addison took fifth in the 1,600 run with a time of 5:18.78. Priscilla Vanheest was seventh in the 800 run at 2:23.68, while teammate Cristina Perez was ninth at 2:28.62.

Brooke Wisniewski placed ninth in the 200 dash at 28.62 seconds,

Grand Haven placed third in the 1,600 relay, fourth in the 800 and 3,200 relays, and fifth in the 400 relay.

BOYS

East Kentwood dominated the boys competition with 165 points. Rockford was next with 112, followed by Hudsonville with 92 and Grand Haven with 80.

Senior Joe Duff was the lone event winner for the Buccaneers as he captured first place in the 3,200 run with a time of 9:32.31. Duff, the school record holder in that event, was 16 seconds ahead of his closest competitor. His brother, Ryan Duff, was third in the event at 9:52.82.

Joe Duff placed second in the 1,600 run with a time of 4:24.58. Ryan Duff was fourth at 4:30.14.

James DeWitt was outstanding in the hurdles events. He took fourth in the 110 hurdles in 14.87 seconds, with teammate Zak O’Brien fifth at 15.77 seconds. DeWitt was third in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 41.03 seconds. Steven DeWitt was eighth at 42.58 seconds.

Schalk Vanniekerk took second in the 800 run as he turned in a time of 1:59.40. Fellow Buccaneer Alex Cramer was eighth with a time of 2:02.75.

The Bucs’ Alec Smith placed seventh in the 100 dash in 11.52 seconds, and was fifth in the high jump at 5-11. Teammate Marshall Rusco took seventh in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-9.

Jacob DeGryse was fifth in the pole vault at 12-3. Dakota Sualeone finished ninth in the discus at 127-3.

The Buccaneers placed fourth in the 3,200 relay, fifth in the 800 relay, sixth in the 1,600 relay and eighth in the 400 relay.
