SL, Fruitport soccer advance in Lakes 8 tourney

Both Spring Lake and Fruitport won their opening-round games in the Lakes Eight Conference girls soccer tournament on Monday. The top-seeded Lakers cruised past Fremont, 8-0, with eight different players scoring goals. Emily Walling, Sarah Park, Molly Miedema, Katie Albright, Leeann Latsch, Annie Cook, Anika Sokolow and Kelsey Kippe each scored for Spring Lake, which has now won four consecutive games. The Lakers are 9-5 on the season.

“We’re clicking. Things are going well,” said coach Jeremy Thelen, whose team hosts either Ludington or Newaygo on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the league tournament.

Fruitport also won by an 8-0 score over Grant on Monday.

Crystal White scored three goals for the Trojans and Debbie Pekel added a pair.
